Brossel A98 DAR / Van Hool #8246

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – depot/remise tram Scharbeek. Another museum bus. This one thinks it is a tram.

Brossel AB6DS / Ragheno #10 515

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Haren. One of the historic buses from the Bruxelles Transport Museum.

PCC 7900 #7927

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue Jules Lahaye. One of the ‘long’ articulated PCCs at Cimetiere Jette. Note that (unlike other Bruxelles trams) these run with two pantographs on the wire.

PCC 7700 #7792

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) - Cimetiere Jette. Tram 7792 passes the cemetery gates on a Line 51 service.

PCC 7900 #7950

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Cimetiere Jette. This is a complicated junction with four lines meeting and some trams terminating at peak times. Car 7950 is near the end of a long trip through the western suburbs with a Line 19 service.

PCC 7900 #7935

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Buhl. Tram 7935 turns towards Ixelles depot with a short-working Line 24 service. This is the only tramway ‘grand union’ in Bruxelles.

Mercedes-Benz O530G II #9030

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue Royale. This bus goes to Wiener – which in the German language means a type of sausage. Quite appropriate for a bendy bus. The architecture here is very nice.

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Fontaine l’Eveque (BE) – Petria. This is the last station on the Charleroi metro before it joins the streets for the last section into Anderlues.

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Charleroi (BE) – Parc. Inside the ‘metro leger’ tunnels. Spare trams are currently stored here, but this tunnel will soon be extended to Charleroi Sud, completing the city centre circle metro line that was started in the 1980s, but never completed.

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Anderlues (BE) zajezdnia/depot. The controls of an SNCV Type S tram. Operated by hand, of course – with the air brake lever on the right. The small lever fixed above it is the air-operated sand lever.

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Anderlues (BE) – zajezdnia/depot. Works car 9176 waits to go out onto the single track leading towards Charleroi. This was a standard SNCV type of the 1970s and early 1980s.

Van Hool AI119/2 #9857

28 march 2009 - Anderlues (BE) – zajezdnia/depot. The TEC tramway works bus is this old Van Hool/DAF from SNCV days - a rare bus.

Bombardier T3000 #3005

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Avenue Albert/Albertlaan. A ‘long’ Flexity car has just left the pre-metro tunnels and runs south towards Stalle, where there is a big park-and-ride terminus.

PCC 7700 #7822

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Botanique/Kruidtuin. The impressive basilica of the St. Maria church frames this tram as it approaches Rue Royale on a Line 94 service.

Bombardier T2000 #2004

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Stephanie/Stefania. Don’t ask – I don’t know why!

BN PCC 7000 #7157

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Ban Eik. To turn at the Ban Eik terminus, these single-ended PCC cars must use a triangle. Similar car 7164 in the distance has already turned and is starting its journey back to the city. At busy times, trams come here every couple of minutes.

BN PCC 7000 #7163

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – G J Martin. A modernised PCC turns towards the Montgomery tunnel entrance. These trams now operate only on Lines 39 and 44 (but not for much longer). Most of them are painted in this special ‘Express’ colour scheme.

Baume & Marpent Standard Metallique #10308

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE) – Cimetiere. A typical scene that could once be found all over Belgium on the SNCV tramways. Electric “Standard” car #10308 drops a lone passenger at the cemetery entrance in Thuin.

La Brugeoise PCC tram #10409

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE) – depot/zajezdnia ASVi. PCC #10409 is pushed from its shed as far as the entrance doors, where the live overhead wire begins. Note the very distinctive, American-style streamlined bodywork. A fabulous tram – and VERY fast!

La Brugeoise PCC tram #10409

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE) – depot/zajezdnia ASVi. The pride of the ASVi collection is this PCC tram, identical in all respects to the classic American PCC design, but built in Belgium for the metre gauge. The SNCV tried these in several areas for a few years, but decided they were a little too complicated. They were too wide for some places and single-ended, too, so they sold them on to Belgrade. This one has been brought back to Thuin and beautifully restored. Note the date of construction – very advanced for the time and before the famous Brussels PCCs were even thought of!

Autorail - SNCV Brabant #AR 86

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE) – depot/zajezdnia ASVi. It is easy to forget that many Belgian country tram lines carried merchandise as well as passengers. Diesel autorail #86 is here drawing a Vicinal goods van.

Autorail - SNCV Brabant #AR 86

28 march 2009 - Lobbes (BE) – Entreville. Autorail #86 from the ASVi collection, running along a typical roadside line. The open trailer is of a type very common in the early days of electric tramways. ASVi exists to preserve the atmosphere and some of the vehicles from the huge Belgian Vicinal network and runs this museum line near Charleroi.

BN PCC 7000 #7052

28 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Haren. This brand new tram depot opens today. I was allowed to take pictures, provided they were not published until the opening, so this is probably the first photo from this place. The tram is also one of the very first to enter the building. Several of these first-series PCC trams have now been converted to works cars. Note that the inspection pits have strong nets, to stop workers (and tram fans) from falling in.

Volvo B9TL/Unvi Urbis 2.5 #YKS-132

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue de la Regence. Another Volvo B9TL is captured as it passes a lovely art nouveaux building in central Brussels – one of the most famous in Belgium. From this angle, you can clearly see the folding canvas roof and wind-down windows (of the bus, not the building).

Volvo B9TL / Unvi Urbis 2.5 #YKS-131

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Avenue Louise/Louza. An upstairs view of the Volvo Urbis. On a good day, the windows go down and the roof rolls back. A good quality bus.

Volvo B9TL / Unvi Urbis 2.5 #YKS-133

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Avenue Louise/Louiza. Like most big cities today.there is a big sightseeing operation in Brussels. This company has spent much money on a fleet of new Volvo Urbis double deckers. Note the Russian language for visitors from that country – the only Brussels operator to do this. A TWB debut for this operator.

STIB 9000 Series #9079

28 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue du Doc. A nice 9000 series car from the Bruxelles Transport Museum eases through the sharp corners on the way to Montgomery. We can thank the local people living in this street for the decision to soon remove all the original Bruxelles 7000 series PCC cars from their two remaining routes – residents don’t like the noise the wheels make round these corners. I hope they liked the nice big squeals made by this 4-wheeler…….

TB Standard #1064

28 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue Jan-Baptiste. This was the standard Bruxelles tram type until PPC cars arrived in the 1950s and was later used as a works car. It has been retained by the Transport Museum and nicely restored.

Bombardier T3000 #3024

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Churchill. This is a crazy tram place. Short Flexity Outlook #3024 has stopped in the centre of the tramway circle with a Line23 service, so passengers can change to Line 3, where two long Outlooks are waiting to leave for the city centre. The loop is so small that the trams almost make a complete circle.

MAN SD200 #142

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Louisa/Louize. The publicity for this tourist service says ‘Tour Brussels on London buses’ – of course, we know better! This MAN is probably ex-BVG Berlin and this is the nearest to London it has ever been……..tourists won’t know this, though. It looks as though it still has the remains of a Berlin destination on the screen.

Baume & Marpent Standard Metallique #10308

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE)- Cimetiere/Cemetery. Tram 10308 squeezes under the railway line through the smallest imaginable space – this is a public road with traffic in both directions!

Baume & Marpent Standard Metallique #10308

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE) – Cimetiere/Cemetery. SNCV ‘Standard’ electric car 10308 running on the ASVi museum line. Almost everything here is typical of the Vicinal network as it was until the 1970s, although newer trams were used on some parts of the system.

Autorail - SNCV Brabant #AR 86

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE). Another typical Vicinal scene as AR 86 runs past back gardens on its way into Thuin village.

Autorail - SNCV Brabant #AR 86

28 march 2009 - Thuin (BE). The ASVi museum line operates a mixture of diesel and electric trams along an old SNCV metre-gauge tram line which is a very typical Vicinal route – partly on the road and partly on private track. Here, a diesel tram pulls an open ‘baladeuse’ trailer of the type seen on many systems in the early days (even Katowice had them), crossing a river alongside the local railway.

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Charleroi (BE) – Charleroi Sud. Works tram 9179 stands outside the fine railway station building at Charleroi. Note the extra steps added when these trams were converted for operation through the metro tunnels. We chartered this tram for an enthusiasts’ trip – the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

BN LRV #6148

28 march 2009 - Anderlues (BE) – Monument. At the end of the line, although trams once continued from here, many more kilometres to Mons. This tram is still in the old TEC colours.

BN LRV #7444

28 march 2009 - Anderles (BE) – Rue Jolibois. At Anderlues, it is easy to imagine the SNCV as it used to be. BN car 7444 heads for Charleroi with a Line 88 service. TEC Charleroi is now starting work to complete the light metro to the original plans, over twenty five years after work stopped with several parts unfinished. This sounds more like an English project.......

SNCV Type S #9176

28 march 2009 - Charleroi (BE) – Monceau-sur-Sambre. On the Charleroi ‘light metro’ tramway, overhead line car 9176 speeds past the local chateau. These trams started life as standard SNCV passenger cars with wooden bodies, which were scrapped and replaced with new metal ones, becoming Type S. These were upgraded to Type SJ, as seen here, in order to run on the newly-built metro. With four powerful motors and new suspension, they were very fast and smooth riding trams.

BN LRV #7433

28 march 2009 - Charleroi (BE) – Beaux-Arts. Three generations of tram at the grandiose Beaux-Arts metro station, TEC BN car 7433 passes an unused platform where two original Charleroi city trams are on display. At one time, the SNCV (now TEC) and Charleroi trams shared much of the track around the city, but now only the last traces of the huge SNCV network remain. The third tram shown here is an SJ Type, modernised by at the local SNCV Jumet depot for service on the metro system and now used as an overhead line car. The current fleet of BN cars replaced these in the 1980s.

Neoplan N5217 SHDC #NM-ST 780

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles/Brussel (BE) – Louisa/Louiza. When I saw this coach, I first thought it was a Stealth Bomber. I never saw such a bus in UK before, although I think they are now quite common in Europe. A TWB debut for this operator, who runs several of these unusual machines. A very unusual design and looks very sexy in all-black paint. I guess the bombs are carried underneath?

Chevrolet P30 / Thomas Mighty Mite #LME 965

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles/Brussel (BE) – Barriere de St Gillies. A chance transatlantic meeting at the famous Barriere tramway junction, as the American- inspired PCC turns in front of a typical American school bus, now used for tourist operations. A debut TWB operator - can anyone identify the make and model of the bus?

Brossel A98 DAR / Van Hool #8246

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles/Brussel (BE) – zajezdnia/remise Haren. Another vehicle from the Bruxelles Transport Museum collection, seen at the entrance to the new Haren tram depot. This is a typical 1960s Belgian city bus. The new tramway depot in the distance opens this Friday.

Brossel AB6DS / Ragheno #10 515

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles/Brussel (BE) – Gare de Schaerbeek. A 1939 bus from the Bruxelles Transport Museum stands outside the very ornate railway station buildings at Schaerbeek. This museum is so large, they have at least two of these – this one is operated and another rests in the museum.

SNCV Brabant Type SE #9974

21 october 2007 - Charleroi, Belgium – Jumet. The ASVi Type S car stands at the current northern limit of the track which once continued to Gosselies. For many years, this whole line from Charleroi has been used only for access to Jumet depot, but work is now under way to reconstruct it and return it to passenger service, all the way to Gosselies.

SNCV Type S #7874

21 october 2007 - Charleroi, Belgium – near Waterloo. The tram that hides in a tunnel. This ex-passenger Type S car lives in the Charleroi metro and is kept specially for track repairs underground, so very rarely comes out into the open air. I managed to take this (very poor) photo from a passing tram, but it’s almost impossible to get a good one. If anyone does manage it, please send me a copy!

BN LRV #7415

21 october 2007 - Anderlues, Belgium. Old and new together at the former junction of the line to Thuin. Note the complicated signalling to protect the single tracks here – original SNCV equipment, still in use today.

BN LRV #7415

22 october 2007 - Anderlues, Belgium – Rue des Deportes. A tram on Line 88 passing Anderlues depot. This section of line farthest from the Charleroi metro is still how it always was in Vicinal days, with just a single track at the side of the road, and was never modernised. I suspect that, if the depot was not situated at Anderlues, it would have closed when the metro was built. Thankfully, these few kilometres have survived to show what the SNCV was like in its glory days.

Van Hool A330 #7255

22 october 2007 - Anderlues, Belgium – Rue de la Station. Outside Anderlues tram depot, a TEC bus meets the tram. Line 91 to Thuin was a tram service until twenty years ago and you can see where the tracks have been cut at the junction. Like many TEC services, the bus follows the old tram route. Nearer to Thuin, this is the track taken over by ASVi for their museum line.

SNCV Cureghem Type N #10480

22 october 2007 - Charleroi, Beaux-Arts. Inside the magnificent metro station at Beaux-Arts in central Charleroi. This station has five or six long, wide platforms – I can’t remember exactly how many – but some aren’t used. A typical peak hour crowd (!) is waiting for the next service tram whilst the ASVi special passes through. This place must have cost millions……..just for one little tram every fifteen minutes.

SNCV Cureghem Type N #10480

22 october 2007 - Charleroi, Belgium – Gilly. A view forward from the end of the metro tracks at Gilly. The viaduct, tunnels and overhead towers are complete for several kilometres through unopened stations, but the money (or the political pressure) ran out before the line was completed. Everything was left in this condition for over twenty years – now, at long last, there are plans to finish the work.

SNCV Cureghem Type N #10480

22 october 2007 - Charleroi, Belgium – Moulin. ASVi museum’s Type N tram crosses the Canal du Sambre on a special trip along the Charleroi TEC ‘ metro leger’, with one of the grandiose station buildings in the background. Before the metro was constructed, trams used to run along the main street of the village in the background – now they are so far away from where people actually live that hardly anyone uses them.

SNCV Brabant Type SE #9974

21 october 2007 - Anderlues, Belgium – depot/zajezdnia TEC. How the SNCV used to look. A Type N and Type S stand together in the Anderlues depot entrance. Both are now owned and operated by ASVi and they occasionally venture onto the Charleroi network for special tours.

SNCV Type S #9063

21 october 2007 - Anderlues, Hainaut, Belgium – depot/zajezdnia TEC. Stored at Anderlues is this Type S tram which was latterly a works car. It’s now owned by the ASVi museum group and is historically important, as it is now the last surviving Charleroi Type S remaining in entirely original condition. The group plan to restore it in due course.

SNCV Type S #9591

21 october 2007 - Jumet, Hainaut, Belgium – depot/zajezdnia TEC. Jumet depot has this Type S overhead line car which is fitted with an auxiliary diesel engine for working away from electric power.

SNCV Type S #9176

21 october 2007 - Anderlues, Hainaut, Belgium – depot/zajezdnia TEC. This Type SJ is now an overhead line car and still displays the very attractive classic lines of a traditional SNCV tram. The SJ Class were a modified Type S tram for use in the Charleroi subways and were rebuilt at the Jumet depot in Charleroi, so were classified as Type SJ – they wore this colour scheme in passenger service.

SNCV Type S #7884

21 october 2007 - Anderlues, Hainaut, Belgium – depot/zajezdnia TEC. The Charleroi ‘metro leger’ or light metro has retained several old passenger cars for works duties and keeps them in very smart condition. This Type S is now an Anderlues depot general works car and has been quite extensively modified for its new role. The Type S were the classic SNCV trams of the 1950s and were themselves a reconstruction of old ‘Standard’ trams with new bodies.
